Opening in 2026, The Hip Hop Museum—formerly the Universal Hip Hop Museum—is poised to become the first institution in the world devoted entirely to celebrating, preserving, and advancing Hip Hop culture under one roof. Located at 585 Exterior Street in the South Bronx, part of the Bronx Point development, this landmark marks a powerful homecoming for a music, movement, and art form born in the borough.
A Living Tribute to Culture
Described as much more than static displays, the museum will feature a 300-seat performance center, galleries, archives, educational programming, community and career-development resources, and rotating exhibitions. It aims to be “a living, breathing tribute to the culture”
From Dream to Reality
- Founded in 2015 as the Universal Hip Hop Museum by pioneers like Rocky Bucano, Kurtis Blow, Grand Wizzard Theodore, Joe Conzo Jr., and Grandmaster Melle Mel
- Renamed The Hip Hop Museum in September 2023
- Initially slated for a 2023 opening in celebration of Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary, the launch was postponed owing to construction delays from the pandemic; it is now scheduled to open in Fall 2026
A Community and Cultural Catalyst
THHM isn’t just a museum—it’s a cultural anchor with deep local impact:
- As part of Bronx Point, it’s surrounded by 542 affordable housing units, nearly 3 acres of waterfront public space, a K–12 school, and community amenities
- The museum expects to attract over a million visitors per year, stimulating a surge in tourism, local business, and cultural pride
- It’s a love letter to Hip Hop’s origins and an investment back into the Bronx community.
